Theme: Biodiversity - What does it mean to you?

The 2011 Ontario Chapter Annual Meeting and Conference was held on March 3-5, 2011 at YMCA Geneva Park near Orillia. The theme was Biodiversity - What does it mean to you?. Fifty-eight people attended the 3-day meeting, including students, government agency and private sector representatives. There were 20 oral presentations covering a variety of subjects ranging from inland fisheries to environmental flow management. Gary Whelan, from Michigan Department of Natural Resources attended on behalf of the North Central Division.

Five students prepared talks and it was judged that Shannon Dorn (University of Waterloo) gave the best oral presentation, thus winning the E.J. Crossman Award. Her presentation was titled "Factors affecting differential mercury levels in landlocked and anadromous Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) from Labrador". Alyssa Murdoch (University of Waterloo) was awarded the Ontario B.A.S.S. Federation Nation Award for the best student poster. Her poster was entitled "Short-term individual growth patterns of anadromous Arctic charr in Ungava- Labrador, Canada". Abstracts for both presentations can be found within the Program.

Business Meeting

Thirty-three members attended the Business Meeting and received an overview of Chapter business during the past year. Gary Whelan presented an update on recent North Central Division activities and President-Elect Dean Fitzgerald led an active discussion on future OC initiatives. Nominations for both the Ontario Chapter Executive Committee and the Student Subunit Executive were held and the OC received candidates for 2 of the 3 soon to be vacant positions; Nick Lapointe (Vice President) and Katie Easterling (Secretary).
